DARRYL JOHNSON

Darryl was born and raised in Los Angeles California. Darryl has been in love with music forever. Hanging out in the hood playing records with friends in the back yard, partying as a teen, having dance offs all summer long. This is when he developed a love for art of dance. He grew up watching Fred Astaire’s dance movies and was very impressed with Fred’s style, finesse and angles as he glided across the floor with ease. He attributes the group The Temptations who exhibits the true art of showmanship and style to have a desire to learn choreography. Michael Jackson was a great influence on Darryl as Michael mixed the finesse and style of Fred Astaire and the smooth soul moves like James Brown to creating a desire inspiring Darryl to do the same, create an amazing style of his own. The artist Prince was also a great inspiration, a master like Michael of commanding the stage and the crowd. You can see all of this in Darryl’s style and commitment to precision and skill. Darryl is most comfortable on stage with mic in hand, bringing joy, excitement and wonderment to the crowds’ faces as they watch him preform. Seeing this joy on everyones face bring a great feeling and a sense of completion too Darryl. Darryl has always said the bigger the crowd the better he preforms. First started singing with his brother Jan and a very good friend William Jones, singing songs from the groups like the Temptations, Spinners and Chi-Lites. At that time he was just singing back up, but later the desire to create his own presents as a lead singer began to manifest in a big way. Darryl  has since choreographed dance moves to the songs that he preforms and has also choreographed shows, for his Group “DMW”. Darryl, back in 70’s, danced on Soul Train for three years. Darryl  was brought on the show as a guest by a friend who was a regular on the show. While dancing, Don Cornelius noticed Darryl and asked to speak with Darryl. Don told Darryl he was so impressed with his moves that he wanted him to be on the show, which Darryl accepted. Darryl was moved immediately to the the riser which was a sign of status on Soul Train, and never looked back. Darryl has since developed a very polished style and presence for the world to see.
